Commissioned Piece in Progress ~

I'm honored to share with you a piece I am working on for a valued collector. When I began this painting I felt such a rush of freedom and emotion - it was a joy! This collector is one of those clients... his trust and true understanding of my work is refreshing; his appreciation for what I do and why I do it is heartening :) and I thanked him for that.

the next step is further warmth, a bit more color, detail and sparkle then completion.

Two Neat-O's I have Recently Discovered:

The soulful tunes of Dustin Ruth ~ I went to a concert last weekend and Dustin was the opening act - the place was loud but my husband and I could tell that he had honest passion. A friend purchased the CD for us and we have been playing it since. Thought-provoking, honest and truly talented work.

A Creation Box for my boys ~ I have those two boys that will create from sun-up til sun-down. They rise in the morning and can hardly wait to get access to the studio and the Might Come In Handy Box (more about that box later). They create games, tools, sculptures, toys, masks, weapons, shadow boxes, obstacle courses for our pet rat, books and action figures, to name some. Not to mention lovely art work.

Before this last week, the pieces would pile up in my studio, where their art table and supplies are. The dreadful catch-22 was there always: I want them to create and I revel in their ingenuity, but the things - the things! I am so anti things-piling-up!

With some moving around of cabinets and boxes and baskets, I was able to secure for them a 3-part box that has become their Creation Box. Once the created treasure has been used and enjoyed, showed off, displayed and begun to wrinkle, I place it in the Creation Box (in their bedroom). When the Creation Box gets full (which I'm sure will happen soon) we'll have to go through it and move some of the pieces back to the Might Come In Handy Box for later deconstruction and use.

Anyway, it seems silly to some, maybe - but this might just change my life :)

Do you have creative geniuses in your home? If so, I'd LOVE to know how you display and treasure their creations without drowning.

Have a wonderful week!

Love & Sincerely, Katie

Always the Emotion First ~ The Next Three (and LAST Three *gasp*) 10x10 Originals for The Forty Minis Collection ~ Free Cards Winner

There are 3 left... three final 10x10's for The Forty Minis Collection. I won't kid you and tell you that I am going to start a new collection of small paintings directly after - because I'm not. I'm exhausted of small paintings. I'm ready to work on the big ones ~ the big paintings that can speak to a whole room.

I started the 85 8x8s Collection in February of 2009, then moved right onto the The Forty Minis Collection with a four week break to release 4 Limited Edition Giclees in November 2009.

The Forty Minis Collection began on December 3, 2009 and is ending September 9, 2010.

The entire 85 8x8s Collection has sold, and there are currently 7 paintings available within the Forty Minis Collection.

This has been entirely fun and a phenomenal learning experience for me ~ I am, everyday, cherishing the amazing mothers and fathers, friends, collectors and fans that I have met through building these two collections.

Beginning after September 9, I will no longer send a weekly email, but an email every other week (or so) ~ with progress of each month's large painting, special offers, events and new products.

Join the email list to be sure and get your emails!

Today, I had three paintings blooming inside me ~ luckily, as I prepared the studio for them, they became richer and more fortified - tonight I let them each out onto their own little canvas. They are the next three (and last three) 10x10 paintings, in random order.

One celebrating the first moments after birth (far right), working title "new world". One of a sweet chubby child feeding his mama, working title "bread". One dealing with letting a young one become a more-grown-up one (center).

Always the Emotion First: these paintings started as sketches that were churned out through emotion. The gut feeling comes first, the urge to get something out.

The Free Cards Winner for last week is Lizzy, thank you for playing!

New Commissioned Painting ~ 13x19 Print Intro Sale, Friday the 27th 7am-midnight PST

I am working on a new commissioned painting, and feeling very inspired by it. This painting is inspired by two earlier pieces:Defined and Flow. The mother protecting the child from the dark, and the child cuddling the mom yet turned away in shyness.

This is a 16x20 painting, and the next stage will be to add warmth and tone, further definition and detail, then energy and sparkle.

By the way, Heather, this original painting is for you, with love from Mike.
Happy Anniversary!

The Archival 13x19 Prints will have a one-day Introductory Sale: $48 each for just one day (regularly $54). The sale will take place only in the Online Etsy Shop, and it will be Friday, the 27th from 7am - midnight (PST).

Have a great day, my friends, Love & Sincerely, Katie

This week, my boys and I were reading The Treasure, by Uri Shulevitz, and I had the opportunity and urge to talk with my boys about believing in your dreams and going for what you really want in life. I then told them what my dream was… funny… I know my ultimate goal, I have envisioned it, but I realized it had been awhile since I’d put it into words. When I shared it with my intently-listening boys, I felt a little surge. I stopped mid-sentence to say “hmmm, it’s good to remember your dreams out loud every once in awhile”.Decisions I’d been trying to make over the last couple weeks suddenly became clearer, as I remembered why I am working so hard, and what my dreams are. Those innocent little boys silently reminded me ~ and I hope, with Uri Shulevitz's help, that I instilled something useful in them as well.

You can grab a print of Tell Me Your Dreams (the original has sold) in the Online Etsy shop!

Free Cards Friday ~ Yammy Cookies ~ Getting Out The Door

Good day!
It is going to be hot here today, so I am trying to wrangle my boys to get some outdoor stuff done early - yah, it has taken me 2 hours to get them and me out of the house. In my house it is a constant ~ Me waiting on my boys: "Just one more second!" "okay, hold on!" (hmmm, I'll do this one more thing while he is doing that... like a quick blog post) Then they are waiting on me. Then they decide to do one more thing, then....

And on and on and on until we are usually late for wherever we are going.

Here is an idea for a yummy snack we named Yammy Cookies - when I made them I didn't bake them quite long enough so they were a bit soft, but delicious!

Walk On Water ~ This Week's New 10x10 Original ~ New Print Size Coming Soon

Walk On Water is this week's new painting for The Forty Minis Collection

Walk On Water

Message from the Artist:

I have a love/fear relationship with water, especially natural bodies of water…
In 2007, I was with my brother, on a small island within Åland, Finland. The atomosphere, the surroundings, the weather and the people created an all-points meaningful experience. We went in the sauna at midnight, half naked with friends, then walked barefoot through the grass and gravel to the Baltic Sea where we slid into the fresh cold water. Refreshed and tingling, I had an amazing time with my brother and his friends. That night I knew I would someday create a painting titled Walk On Water. Since then, I have tried to remember the feelings and images and compose a painting to honor these moments. My brother and I.

This new painting features a mother and child in the water and brings me to the intense feelings of pretector that I feel when I am in the water with my boys ~ this began as a bathers painting, then quickly expanded and began, for me, to relate to the mystery and magic of that sauna night. I allowed this painting to take the name I’d been saving. For this painting, from the beginning, I knew I wanted water and I knew I wanted the child’s face close to the mother’s breast, other than that, they led me to where they are today.

You can grab a print of Walk On Water (the original has sold) in the Online Etsy shop!

Camas Live ~ People's Choice Award ~ 2 Local Photographers

Camas Live 2010 filled me up and wiped me out this last weekend! It was a lot of fun, a lot of work and a joy to meet so many new people. Thank you to all who came to downtown Camas to share conversations and art.

I was very honored to receive an award of People's Choice at the end of the event - I was surprised and honored (and embarrassed because I stepped away from my booth for 5 minutes the whole weekend and it was in those five minutes that the award was announced from the stage... oopsie!) Thank you to those who voted!

I had the fortune of being placed next to two very talented photographers, Angi Slocum and Carla Foth Christian - Carla generously snapped the above photos of my booth, her work is gorgeous.

Time and time again I have been notified by strangers that I shouldn't be carrying my babies around - they are 1/3rd of my weight and their long, strong and sweet legs reach my knees. Time and time again I smile and know that it is so hard to resist the opportunity to be so close to them.

"The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all, the world needs dreamers who do."

~Sarah Ban Breathnach

Over the past couple weeks I have been working ON my business, as well as working FOR my business. A constant internal reminder has been: What message do I want to send through my paintings? How can I stay present and care even more about each moment and each action? What am I to learn in each situation?
I have some changes and additions in mind, and I am looking forward to them.

Have a Wonderful Day!

Recent Honors ~ My First Painting *GASP* and the Story of How it all Began: this Painting Motherhood stuff...

Gasp...* I'm going to show you my first motherhood painting... beware... personal vulnerability is coming...

Recently, throughout the last week I have been unbelievably honored in a variety of ways.

The Leaky B@@b
The Leaky B@@b is an online "pub" where we can "let it all hang out." Honestly supporting any and all amounts of breastfeeding and those that support breastfeeding with a splash of humor. Shaken, stirred, on the rocks or frozen, no matter how it is served up it's the real deal with personal stories and experiences. Striving to be a safe place, The Leaky B@@b has a no-tomatoes policy, tomato-throwing will get you bounced faster than you say "bash."
See the blog post!

Jessica generously hosted a giveaway for a print, and I was shocked and happy to discover 95 had people signed up within just 1 hour. Thank you Jessica!

The Birth Project
A self-published magazine that strives to normalize pregnancy, birth, and the entire “childbearing year.” Through too-often traumatic depictions in popular culture, birth has been turned into something that scares many. We often forget that we ALL have in fact participated in the birth process, simply by being born… not to mention the fact that women have been giving birth to babies throughout the entire history of humanity. read more at The Birth Project's website

Within The Birth Project's Issue XIV, I was honored to have Star Crossed printed along with Angela Seeling's emotional and beautiful writing. Read Angela's Twin Birth Story

Thank you Jenna!

Stones Of Healing Blog

Cara is a mama making beautiful, sturdy, healing nursing necklaces and other jewelry for mamas! Check out the Stones Of Healing Etsy shop!

Thank you Cara!

SO, as I am reading through the very kind notes from each of these generous mamas, including the comments from the 95 entries (thank you!) on The Leaky B@@b, as well as this lovely testimonial from a recent buyer:

"Your art defines some of my most intimate and magical moments as a mother. Every day, I walk my four year old and one year daughter to the park in the same way you have painted. I have never bought a piece of art before. I've seen beautiful art but never art that inspires and touches my soul the way yours has done. You are truly gifted. Thank you so much for sharing this gift with my family." J.C., Hillsboro, OR (see more touching testimonials )

(thank you J!)

...I am thinking non-stop of May 2006, when I was knee deep in creating motherhood (and other)-inspired colored pencil pieces and dead-set on becoming an illustrator (for magazines and such), and NOT a Fine Artist. I had a literal slap in the face when inspiration struck. I was painting a mural on my son's bedroom wall and realized what I was meant to do ~ set the pencils aside (and what I had worked years to become as a commercial artist) and begin painting again, as a Fine Artist. I had painted before, but the painting motherhood thing was new and obvious.

One evening my baby boy called to me and as if I'd been waiting, I ran to him and we meshed. This painting was born the next day - I Needed You, Too.

I was getting ready do an art fair down in town (Kalama, WA, my artist friend Marie Wise was with me) so along with my colored pencil illustrations of birds and boats, I took this, my first motherhood painting (painted on Plexi glass because that is all I had handy that was large enough). I set it out near my table and referred folks to my New Painting! And How Excited I Was About It!

The title I Needed You Too made such perfect sense to me.

I received mixed messages about this first painting from customers and passers-by. One message stands out to me though: a woman said the colors were wrong for her decor.... hmmm. :)

This week, seeing the amazing feedback from those who believe in me, I am thinking non-stop of this painting, and how I created it then took it directly out into the public for feedback. How this painting spoke to me emotionally (though maybe not technically or color palette-wise) it felt *right*, it felt vulnerable and it fed me in a strange sort of way. This painting began it all... and I feel such gratitude for that moment when inspiration slapped me.

That was my only painting for May, and uneasiness was probably to blame for just one painting created in July 2006 (none in June) and only one in August 2006. Revving up, though, September brought 6 new paintings and October brought 12 (only 3 of these 18 paintings are still available: Every Pure Cell, Unadorned and Despair 2: See Unadorned and Every Pure Cell in the Etsy Shop).

I have been unbelievably honored in a variety of ways throughout the last 4 years, utilizing inspiration and techniques I was honing for illustration, I do not look back on anything as a waste of time - a graphic design career, a pile of digital and colored pencil illustrations aimed at advertising, and many many small acrylic paintings (because acrylic paint felt safe around my babies) painted on board. From the moment I knew I wanted to be an artist (at 6 years old, I suppose!) up until this moment, the path has been perfect.

Thank you for coming along this portion of the path with me! And to many of you who have been with me nearly the whole way!

Love & Sincerely, Katie

In My Previous (or Next) Life I Was/Will Be... ~ Free Cards Winner

It is the beginning of a beautiful new week ~ a week chock full of possibilities, I can feel it - can you? :)

I have known for many years that if I was not an artist, there is something else that I would be, and for goodness sakes, I love it so much that it is possible I was an *organizer* in my past life, or will be in the next life :)

When I was 8 years old, I would attend play dates and slumber parties and I would encourage my friend to let me help her clean her room. Really! If she let me, I would sort and organize, stack and shuffle. I remember visiting my younger cousin and spending time cleaning up her room for her.

As a child of 10, I re-organized my bedroom on a weekly basis - urging to make it more "business-like" and clean, then alternating to make it more "fun and creative". One of my very favorite childhood memories was moving the furniture around the living room with my mom, making a new space, a new atmosphere and a new energy flow. And I have read that rearranging the look of a room encourages creative thinking.

When I was 16 and babysitting frequently, I would play with the kids, then while they napped or watched a cartoon I would frantically go to town on the kitchen or piles of toys in the kids' rooms. Need I say my overwhelmed mama clients liked me?

It is possible that my freakish organizing habit really blossomed when experiencing the chaos and blocked energy living within the walls of some of those homes I sat at - not to mention the effect it had on the behavior of the children.

Some know that I have attempted (and will continue to over the years) combine my necessity for clean, clear, open spaces with my love of painting in my Interior Landscape paintings.

Now that I have my own home and family, my obsessive tendencies come in very handy (too handy sometimes). For me, peace is found in being able to see the corners of the rooms, the baseboards and being able to walk around in the pitch dark knowing you will not run into anything. Also, not worrying about *who* or *what* lives behind my stuff.

I have googled to try and find others like myself, and several years ago I discovered Fly Lady http://www.flylady.net/, and felt at home. It was Fly Lady who helped me to put my thoughts in place, giving me logical and valuable reasons for my compulsions :)

I see other mamas who struggle with the overload of *things*
(and it goes beyond the physical, but that is another post).

I want to help but it is hard, being among adults now instead of children,
to know how to not overstep the line, or offend.

I have a dear friend who recently accepted my willingness to intervene, as I felt her frustration over the chaos of her surroundings - her beautiful home is hidden by *things* that need a new home besides hers.

Eager to help, I offer this advice to her, and it occurs to me that it may spark something in someone else, so I share it here:

1) Get out your big garbage bag (or 2 or 3) - for donations - enlist a trusted and non-judgmental friend.

2) Allow your friend to take your kids to the park for 30-40 minutes (you hide your laptop and turn off your phone) JUST 30-40 minutes, though!

3) You have just 30-40 minutes to fling 50 things - I'm serious now - 50 things (or impress yourself with 75) - do it quickly and think of the people you will be blessing - the people who have next to nothing, people who would love to have that toy/book/kitchen thing/or whatever it is blocking your peace.

4) You have to do it quickly using your first impression of each object, don't take the time to get attached or remember where/when you got it - just use your instinct and get an immediate feeling from each thing - if it doesn't bring you happiness, fling it into the bag.

5) When your friend returns with your kids let her/him take your bag to their trunk - hopefully they will promise not to look in it. Allow them to then take it to your chosen charity for you (or wait a week to do so if you'd like, just in case).

Plug in the music, rock out while you work, and reward yourself later with a deep breath as you feel at home with more space, nibble some dark chocolate and pat yourself on the back.

6) Repeat as often as necessary until you find your peace :)

Simple, eh?

A variation would be:

1) the kids play (or allow your friend to take them to the park) and you (or your friend helps you) tackle one area at a time (very important: laptop and phone must be silenced to avoid distraction)

The Free Cards Winner for last week is Tara ~ thank you all for playing!
I wish you a productive day,
Love & Sincerely, Katie
