New Commissioned Painting in Process ~ Free Cards Winner

I'm honored to show a process shot of a new commissioned piece, I may call it Shining Stars.
The mother in this painting was a child in a previous commissioned piece, cool huh? :)

"Everybody knows that a good mother gives her children a feeling of trust and stability. She is their earth. She is the one they can count on for the things that matter most of all. She is their food and their bed and the extra blanket when it grows cold in the night; she is their warmth and their health and their shelter; she is the one they want to be near when they cry. She is the only person in the whole world in a whole lifetime who can be these things to her children. There is no substitute for her. Somehow even her clothes feel different to her children's hands from anybody else's clothes. Only to touch her skirt or her sleeve makes a troubled child feel better."
Katharine Butler Hathaway

The Free Cards Winner for last week is Nguyen, your Free Cards are on their way to you!

I'm getting prepared for the English Estate Winery show on Saturday and Sunday July 10 & 11 - in Camas/Vancouver Washington. This is always a great event and I will have my own space this year - which means plenty of room for originals, 8x10 and 12x12 prints, Glass Art Charms and cards. I hope to see you there!

Have a great evening!

Free Cards Friday ~ Committing

As I'm cleaning out the rat cage this morning, I am thinking about committing - being committed to the choices I make and those that depend upon me. I enjoy my son's cute rat, she's sweet and good (though very hard to litter box train!), and cleaning out her cage shows that I am committed to her as our little pet.

The laundry, vacuuming and toilets call to me - and as I tackle them one by one (or all mixed together like I have a tendency to do) I will try to think about the work as a commitment to my little family who wears the clothes and dances on the floor with sticky little toes (and crumbs flying).

It's Free Cards Friday! Comment on THIS blog post (here at the blog or on the Facebook page) throughout the weekend and be in the running to win some cards ~ I'll choose the winner on Monday.

Have a great Friday,

Bringing Forth ~ this week's 10x10 ~ Sharing Our Dreams with our Children

Bringing Forth is the newest painting in The Forty Minis Collection!

motherhood painting by Katie m. Berggrenmotherhood painting by Katie m. Berggren

I believe our children benefit from seeing us live our dreams - as long as we find a way to include them. Imagine the lessons and virtues to be had as we make positive choices on how to use our time, how to speak to others and how to represent ourselves in the best light. How to make room for our goals, trust in our gifts and bring forth the creations of our souls. There were times when I had only time to paint with a squirmy toddler on my hip, or while dinner simmered, but the forward pull is and should be undeniable.

You can find Bringing Forth and/or the remaining available paintings from The Forty Minis Collection in the Online Etsy shop.

Free Cards Friday Winner ~ Humble Beginnings

When we purchased our new house a year ago, we made sure it had a den with a big window that I could use for my studio. It is better than I imagined with double doors and a lovely neighborhood view. Before this house, I painted in my laundry room (though I never told anyone that), squeezed between the sink and the dryer. Before that – the kitchen table.

I believe that we can make amazing work anywhere we choose. It seems logical sometimes to wait for our ‘ideal’ location before we begin, but why not get going wherever you can make room? I come from humble beginnings, and am forever grateful for the space I have now. It is simple, but it is my space to create.

Over the last 5 months, I have moved my kids’ art table into the space as well – I have less room now, but we can all create together, which is nice.

Above image: Humble Beginnings; hanging in my current studio - with a card that says:

"Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin, and an antiseptic" ~ John Henry Lowett

When I was working at my kitchen table, years ago, I felt penned-in, as though my giant intentions were squashed into a small space that I had to clean up each night after working. But this little space did the job, it got me started and before too long I realized that I could probably find a better place to work if I just did a little brain-storming and a little reorganization of my home.

I am forever grateful for the spaces I found to create ~ and for the willingness to create wherever I could find space.

Free Cards Friday ~ 17 Children with Paints (in my garage) - Oh My!

A group of myself and 6 additional mothers from our elementary school have decided to keep in touch and keep our children inspired this summer with some pre-planned activity days.

It took an hour for 7 mothers to agree on 4 dates when we were all free throughout the summer!

Our activity dates include Art, Nature (The Shape of Our Land), Building (The Shape of Our Cities) & Food Science.

The first event chosen by me (Art of course!) was yesterday afternoon - in my garage - and I had the honor of leading all 17 of our children (age 2- grade 3) through types of printing, using paint, paper and cardboard and a variety of different textured things.

We talked about Monoprints and Relief Prints and then jumped in and got messy. I'm honored to share with you some of the lovely artworks they created.

Thank you to our Kmoms group for coming and sharing time, paint and textured things... and for the results of some uniquely creative and inspiring artwork, happy messy kids and blue shoe prints all over my garage floor...

This activity held the attention of 95% of them for almost an hour, the clean-up took close to two :)

(my little beautifuls)

textured wallpaper makes a great printing plate!

Enjoy!

Mommy Changes Like the Weather

Am I the only mother who wonders what is wrong with me when I annoy my beautiful children with my negative moods? Or shall I say: bounce my moods off of them ~ they are amazingly resilient and do a good job of not giving me the attention I don't deserve. I know I’m not the only one… but I feel alone when I do this, and terrible. I have so much to be thankful for… yet it is hard sometimes to smile.

My son said “Mommy, sometimes you are nice and sometimes you aren’t, I wish you’d make up your mind!" he was being just a bit silly, no, actually, he was being honest. I told him I would really try, and I will.

Sometimes I wish I didn’t have to refer to the adult brain so instantly, to analyze, and I could think more like a little boy – with little boy patience and little boy humor and little boy wonderment. I admit it was humorously wonderful today when my son was vacuuming in the nude, even though I had insisted he do so because he and his brother had nibbled through half a box of Trader Joe’s crackers and left crumbs everywhere while I was trying paint a brick wall for his birthday party.

When I am consciously involved with my kids, everything and every emotion swims over my heart. We have an immense amount of pure fun, and we have scuffles ~ both intense. It is when I am distracted in my adult-world that parenting feels easier - when I ignore my kids (which I usually do not do). I don't like feeling like something is wrong with my parenting skills if all is not happy crackers in a home with two unbelievably bouncy little boys who at times drive me absolutely bonkers, though my fierce feelings of affection for them like to rip my heart out. I am tired of feeling inadequate when people tell me what a wonderful time they are having (every time I inquire how they are) with their kids when I know they might be falsifying (or ignoring).

Deep As A River, by Katie m. BerggrenI think about this when I think about my paintings – what do I want out of my painting career? When I’m gone, what do I want my collection of paintings to say about me, and about life in general? What message do I want to share with the world? How do I want to help? Do I want every painting to be a phony sense of perfectly thrilling fulfillment, or do I want (like I say I want) to be honest, earnest, conscious and real?

This was really the purpose of and the result of the 85 8x8s Collection and the Forty Minis Collection.

I ache for honesty, I ache to throw complex to the wind and paint something that really feels good inside and out - a piece that is truly honest. I did that with Deep As A River – the newest painting (above) – I feel 100% satisfied with the message I placed into the current of the world with this painting – this painting speaks me. And I want more of them.

When I was a child, there was a radio station called 97.1 KISN, and my mom loved it. It was oldies, and I like oldies to this day (for a bit). My brother, though, called it Happy Crap, and that resonated with me today – I don’t want my painting portfolio to be a collection of Happy Crap (and I don’t think it is, but I think I am tempted to head that way sometimes, just out of habit) – pieces created just for the sake of a happy oblivious smile because I know that is what others want to feel.

I want my collection of work to be emotive and intriguing, insightful and interesting…

So, shall we examine what we want out of our lives? To make sure we are working in a direction we should? Shall we be honest with ourselves to ensure we are not just doing what others think we should be doing? Geesh, I guess today it was time for me to do so...

There is a quote I can’t quite place – something about “if you are going the wrong way, you should turn around, not speed up in the wrong direction…” Do you know this quote?

I feel that I am going in the right direction, in general, just sometimes I stumble then get up and look the wrong way for guidance.

Have a wonderful night – I wish for you instances of pure honesty.
Love & Sincerely, Katie
