Earth Mama unveiled ~ Studio & Office Closure ~ Free Cards Winner

Earth Mama ~ in honor of the stories...

Earth Mama's Story:

She had come to me before. This was, in truth, her fourth appearance in 3 years ~ though she’s changed a bit over the years ~ her hair has gained more flair and detail, her body more style.

Each time as she emerged onto a canvas, I was tricked in the beginning that she needed a distracted child against her. In this current composition, the indifference of their painted relationship, once again, required the child’s removal.

In the previous three paintings, the child was removed twice and stayed in the third ~ the distraction stayed as well in this third painting and though I knew from the beginning that that painting was meant to be special, in the end I had trouble connecting with it ~ I had failed to understand the message. To be honest, this painting awaits its finally-decided fate of repainting.

One painting proved successful as a lone woman and has gone off to live with a family. One hides unfinished in my closet.

There was a reason why a child didn’t fit in the composition with the woman whom I knew just had to be a mother ~ she has a non-earth child.

But the woman always starts out the same: she’s confident and eyeing me, testing me. This new solo woman has enticed me to continue working on her, though I love so much about her, deep down I wondered at the very beginning if she too would end up in the closet.

I enjoyed the process of highlighting her skin and defining her bare shoulders and smooth chest. I had determined, while painting her eyes, that she is coming out of apprehension, hiding her nerves with humor and mirth. She is whimsical, and she is a bit of an Earth Mama. Though there seemed, at first, no way to show her role as a mama, I knew from the beginning that she was one - thus the initial child no longer accompanying her.

I seriously wondered how she would fit in with the rest of my paintings, her being alone and all...

Then as I worked on her, I asked her why she’d come again and I wondered about her message. Her expression was unsure, but longed to be something more than indifferent.

Thinking out loud, I realized in only a second that I KNEW her purpose ~ and suddenly two pieces of a puzzle come together in a way that gave me chills…

Here is the first piece of the puzzle: Over the past three years, I’ve been approached by mamas whose motherhood was snuck from them as they lost their precious child at or just before birth. I have listened to their stories and have felt so hard for them. Two mothers in the last week, alone, have contacted me with their stories, and each detail saddens me.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I knew a woman who was also expecting her first child, we communicated via email. When my son was 2 weeks old and sleeping peacefully, I emailed to see how she was enjoying motherhood. She wrote back with a heart-chilling story of giving birth to a baby girl that she new was no longer living. The physical and emotional pain of birthing a beautiful baby that she could only hold for one afternoon.

The distress sent me to my son’s bedroom where I held him and rocked him and tearfully thanked all willing to hear that my son was safe and healthy. My friend’s story changed my life. She has since gone on to have another sweet daughter, and they talk to her of her older sister.

I have wanted to approach this soulful subject matter in a painting for a long time, as a way to honor those free souls, and the mamas whose babies left too soon...

This new woman is the second piece of the puzzle:
A true Oh My God moment occurred the night I realized this Earth Mama would carry her child’s spirit and memory in the form of an image, with her always, around her neck and close to her heart. In the form of a talisman.

There was a reason why a child didn’t fit in the composition with the woman whom I knew just had to be a mother ~ she has a non-earth child.

As I sketched the large pendant across her open chest, unsure of the exact mother & child image it would contain, my indifferent no-longer-solo woman finally gave me a smile.

And now, upon her completion,
this Earth Mama shares earth and fire with the sunshine around her neck, despite the blues draping her shoulders.

Love to you
, Katie

Distant Light ~ complete & emerging from the studio

~ I'm pleased to announce the Release of Distant Light ~
the newest painting to emerge from within the studio.

I'm finding myself enamored with the way an older child can cherish a mama's breast. How he realizes it was once, or still is, a gateway to mama's love and comfort. How he pats and caresses while deep in thought or listening to a story ~ often without realization.

Thank you for your support and feedback throughout this process ~

Free Cards Winner ~ The Joy Of Less ~ Time Well Spent, Available 10x10 Painting

I've recently finished reading The Joy Of Less by Francine Jay ~ and I enjoyed it in many ways ~ here's one:

below statement quoted from Francine's book. ©Francine Jay, 2010

“Unfortunately, busyness seems to be a prized trait in our culture - as if more activities, meetings and responsibilities we can jam into our schedules the better people we are. Ask a friend what she’s doing today, and you’ll likely get an exhaustive rundown of various tasks… it’s almost as if we are trying to out-do each other in how many things we can ‘get done’.

Minimalist living is the opposite. We’ve been learning how to say ‘no’, eliminate the excess, consolidate, standardize and delegate no so we can get more done – but so we have less to do… The objective is to leave some time open, empty and free – instead of always ‘doing’, we want some time to just ‘be’.

Just ‘be’ – it’s a foreign concept to many of us. How often are you able to kick back with a cup of tea and simply let your thoughts wander… or soak for an hour in a bubble bath… in our ‘busy is best’ culture, we can hardly imagine ‘wasting’ time on such idle pursuits. And God forbid someone caught us… they’d think we have nothing to do!”

above statement quoted from Francine's book. ©Francine Jay, 2010

It’s funny, because years ago, in my sketchbooks, I started writing about “formless being” and “being vs. doing”. I have a variety of phrases on my Title List regarding this, including “create more, consume less”.

I have been wanting to further incorporate the idea of Being vs. Doing into my paintings for years ~ but then, it seems that since it is a thought I hold passionately inside, it does come out through the paintings, doesn’t it?

New Blue Perspective ~ Painting on the Floor

Maybe it is just par for the New Years course, but stagnant cobwebby feelings were creeping in yesterday ~ so I thought to try something new...

Every evening I stand at my painting counter (Monday I stood for a total of 8 hours working on the same painting ~ yikes! ~ that went well into the wee hours). So last night I flopped my stuff on the floor to get some new perspective. I'm liking this new piece which is helping me realize some good emotion...

And I always start in brown and white before adding color ~ so I broke out a Manganese Blue Hue.

How are you feeling as the New Year is upon us? Are you itching for some change? Are you finding doorways opening toward the realization of your resolutions?

Did you make resolutions?

Any inspiration is always welcomed ~ Have a great day!

Love & Sincerely, Katie

Book Winner ~ Skeletons on Sk8boards, huh?

The winner of The Artist's Way book and Morning Pages journal is Tina ~

(Tina, I do not have any contact information for you, so please respond this week!)

Here is what Tina wrote:

"The book would go to both my daughters and myself, and the journal would be for my elder daughter. We have been working on the creative aspects of our lives and have that as a goal for this year. My hope is that by encouraging their creativity, it will also encourage their confidence in themselves, as well as their compassion."

Thank you Tina, (also, for your kind words) and I hope that these books will push you and your daughters steadily toward your goals and further developing your creative selves. I think you are right about creativity encouraging their confidence and I am thrilled to maybe help with a tiny part of that. I hope you enjoy your times shared in art.

Being one of the "artsy" children in school, was my ticket to acceptance. In 5th grade the children would gather around my desk and watch me draw skeletons on skateboards and in sixth grade (and beyond, for sure) they gathered around to laugh as I drew our teachers with emphasis and gusto. We all felt like we were part of something special as that "secret" drawing was passed around beneath the instructor's (possibly overly large or pointy) nose. From acceptance grew confidence, which led to further practice of drawing.

I have the honor to have two little boys who both love art more than any other activity. They role their eyes when I occasionally ask if they want to watch a movie or cartoon (Bugs Bunny is an exception) and head to the studio to dig in our Might Come In Handy Box and begin creating and drawing.

I also have the honor to be one of three Art Discovery mamas in my son's 1st grade class. Last year I was the solo Art Discovery mama in his Kindergarten class and it was a true joy to sit with twenty little bodies around me and watch their excitement and absorption as we discussed a variety of artists, projects, media and techniques ~ right before I set them free with materials.

This year, it thrills me even more as the children are older and throw themselves head first into their projects. Some will sit for 35-45 minutes painting intently.

Last month we painted Native American masks made from cereal boxes ~ to say the least... it was Am-A-zing. One little girl drew the attention of others and they were clearly inspired by her as she happily worked for an extended period of time, carefully adding additional detail to her mask.

Needless to say, while watching her I was instantly transported back to the days of skeletons on skateboards (and other things my classmates begged me to draw, which I will not elaborate on, out of embarrassment!).

Education.com says one value of art for children is that it allows them to:
"Experiencing success. Because art leaves the end open to the creator, all children experience a measure of success."

Another value according to Education.com, art allows children to:

"Express their feelings and emotions in a safe way. They learn to control their emotions and recognize that they can express and handle negative as well as joyous feelings through positive action."

I thank you all for contributing your thoughts and inspirations ~ and I wish you luck and confidence as you move forward in your artistic endeavors in 2011 ~ practice, practice, practice ~ especially if you love it.

Have a great week, I will have more books to give away as we travel through this year.

Love & Sincerely, Katie
