A Note On (the dreaded practice of) Multi-Tasking!

(note: I've pre-published this post to help keep the blog warm while I am gone!)

I receive the Manage Your Muse newsletters from Lynn Cutts and this week's seemed perfect to share, Lynn's daughter gave me permission to share her words with you ~ this one in particular strikes a chord with me because I am not a fan of multi-tasking. At least for me, I end up getting less done and feeling worse!

Take a Break from Multi-tasking
How many things do you do at once Three? Five? Twenty five?

Multi-tasking has become a way of life for so many of us. We cook dinner while yelling at the kids, talking on the phone, and watching television, all at once, missing out on the scent of the onions frying, the burble of the boiling water, and the excitement (or frustration or despair) in our child’s voice.

We do e-mail, talk on the phone, and attempt to file, simultaneously, all in the attempt to save time. But what ends up happening is we burn the dinner, and slight the kids, mis-file that document and forget to note the appointment we made while on the phone.

The end result is that often multi-tasking takes more time in the long run than if we’d slowed down and did just one thing at once.

So this week, subscribe to the belief that “less is more”.
Make a point of doing at least one task a day all by its lonesome, without doing five (or two or even one) other things at once. Use that as a breathing space in your day.

Decluttering & Simplifying - Featured Article by Bruce Elkin

(note: I've pre-published this post to help keep the blog warm while I am gone!)

A Sincere Thank You to Bruce Elkin, Personal Life Coach, Career Coach, Life Design Coach
who allowed me to share this information with you.
This is a topic that is very close to my heart...

******************************************

TO "DECLUTTER," OR "SIMPLIFY" - OR "BOTH"?

One of the most constant questions people send me is, "What's the difference between de-cluttering and simplifying?" Another is, "Why does it matter?"

Let me answer the first question first. Then I'll take a stab at the second one.

Decluttering

Whether it relates to a messy room, a messy house, a messy mind, or a messy business or organization, decluttering can be useful process. But it doesn't often achieve a real and lasting result.

Motherhood Painting: KissDecluttering is a problem-solving technique. And the action in most problem solving is about getting rid of what you don't want and don't like. Or merely getting rid of the intensity - the negative feelings surrounding the problem.

So, most decluttering is driven by messiness, or too much stuff in too small a space. When you set about to get rid of all that you don't like and don't want in your room, mind, house, or biz you're reacting to the intensity of the "problem." But, when you finish, the intensity is gone. Your space is neat and clean. You feel relieved. In the short term, you feel pleased with yourself, and your space.

But in the long-term nothing has really changed.

All you really got rid of was the intensity that came with the mess. You didn't really change any of your habits, or the
underlying structure of your life.

Soon, the room, house, mind, or biz is messy again. And in need of decluttering. And so you go, oscillating between messy and neat, better and worse, better and worse... without achieving a stable end result.

Here's how it looks, structurally:

A problem
leads to
intensity
leads to
action
leads to
less intensity
leads to
the problem remaining,
(or coming back.)

So you get your room, house, life, or biz clean and decluttered, but it doesn't stay that way. Your old habits kick in, and eventually you mess up the space again. Once again, you're faced with a problem to solve.

When the intensity gets strong enough - "I can't stand this mess; it's driving me crazy!" - you start throwing things in garbage bags and boxes, and hauling them off to Goodwill or the recycling depot.

And, in the frenetic process that often accompanies decluttering, you might toss out something that you didn't mean to toss, something that has real value to you.

Simplifying

Motherhood Painting: Tender AffectionSimplifying is different. Simplifying is not just about getting rid of what you don't like and don't want. It is about focusing on something that you truly care about - something you do like and do want - and taking action to bring it into being.

Simplifying is driven by a clear, compelling vision of a desired result. Whether it's a room, a house, your life, or your business or organization, when you simplify, you are designing and creating something that you truly desire.

Instead of frantically tossing things into boxes and bags, you step back. Calmly, you imagine (envision) the kind and quality of room, house, mind, biz, or org you most want. You begin to see it clearly in your mind.

Perhaps your room has a reading nook, or a meditation corner. Perhaps your house has a separate room in which
to practice Pilates and Yoga.

Perhaps you want your biz to be smaller but better, and you take the time to define "better." You lay out specific success criteria, as Yvon Chouinard did when he downsized and simplified Patagonia.

"We never set out to become the biggest outdoor clothing manufacturer," Chouinard told his staff when he announced the downsizing, "only the best."
And then he outlined his vision, values, and a set of principles for becoming a simpler, slimmer and sleeker company. The best!

Did it work?

Yes. Patagonia cut back their product line significantly. They strived to use only organic and recycled materials. They cut the number of colours so they could only use natural dyes. And in spite of all the critics and naysayers who thought Chouinard's vision would ruin the company, they thrived.

"Every time we've done the right thing," Chouinard said, "our profits have increased."

So de-cluttering - cutting back, getting rid of things of little value - is not necessarily a bad thing to do. But it is critical to see it as a process that supports what you want to create.

When you envision the kind and quality of room, house, life, or business you most want, the mess that upsets you is best seen as merely current reality as-it-is, and not as a "problem" that you must solve.

When you can see both the vision of the result you want and the current state (reality) of that result in mind at the same time, you set up a useful "creative tension" that both energizes and
guides your action in the direction of what you want.

One way of looking at this connection between de-cluttering and simplifying is summed up by author Hans Hofmann when he said, "The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that necessary may speak."

But simplifying can go beyond merely letting the necessary speak. It can be a way of creating the necessary, that which you deeply desire and would love to see exist in your room, home, life or
business.

This is why simplicity matters. This is why, as Leonardo de Vinci said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Or, in more current language, "It's cool to live a simple, rich and flourishing life."

Bobs Red Mill ~ A Lovely Visit to Milwaukie, Oregon

Yesterday, I took my 85 year old Grandma and my two little boys to Bob's Red Mill in Milwaukie Oregon. We had been planning this trip for a couple weeks and I was so excited.

We have a lot of Bob's products in our kitchen, and my boys know his name. My 5 year old loves Bob's 10 grain cereal and I regularly use his flax seed, whey, gluten, as well as faithfully using his organic oats, organic whole wheat flour, and unbleached white flour.

Growing up, my mom baked our bread and once took me as a small child (with my Grandma) to Bob's Red Mill, in its earlier location (before it unfortunately burned in 1988).

Traveling there yesterday and walking among the shelves and bags of wholesome choices, barrels of bulk goodies brought back very hidden memories for me. I remembered my first (and only) visit to his store when I was just a little one. Peering into the big barrels of flour and not quite understanding how the whole bulk foods system worked.

When we walked in we were greeted by Nancy, Bob's Executive Assistant who led us to the cafe and explained very kindly our options and how to go about ordering. I was impressed from the get-go. Not to mention the moment you step out of your car, you are pulled in by the amazing aromas... :)

We had lunch in the cafe seating area, overlooking the store. At one point near the end of our lunch, I took my four year old to the potty and when we returned my five year old was beaming, as well as my Grandma... Bob had been by!

He had visited with them for a moment and given my son a little wooden coin that signified a free cookie. My boy was infinitely proud of the whole experience.

I told him he was my hero for meeting Bob and after lunch we looked all over the store, I wanted to meet Bob, too! My four year old covered his face with his hands and cried quietly when we found out Bob had left ~ he really wanted to meet him, too.

"I didn't want a free cookie, Mommy, I just really wanted to meet Bob..."
he told me. I believe him.
He has never cried for lack of meeting Chuck E. Cheese :)

While my Grandma perused the bulk section, I took my boys to the bakery case for cookies. The woman behind the counter was so sweet - she opened a new bag of chocolate chip for us (since they were sold out of almost everything) and as she placed them in the case she broke one in her gloved hand.

"Oh well"
she says "I'll just have to throw this one away, unless you want it." I most gratefully did :)

As we approached the counter to pay for my little one's cookie (my big boy proudly handed his little wooden coin over the counter), she said "I've got another coin back here, don't worry about it." And she gave my little one his cookie for free too.

So, in the end she gave us three free cookies (they were $1.25 each).

I purchased bunches of organic oats, organic 7-grain cereal, some interesting Anasazi Beans, several loaves of the best bread made with organic flour, potato-rosemary buns (must I say more about these?) and a big bulk bag of organic hard white whole wheat flour. Heaven, truly.

I seriously felt like a kid in a candy store - except I was a mama in a whole grain health foods store - which is much better.

It was entirely addicting ~ we spent 3 1/2 hours there!

All in all, our visit to Bob's Red Mill was a complete success. We left there tired and proud, my big boy and Grandma still bubbling about meeting Bob, and my little boy (his snicker doodle gone now) drifting off to sleep in his car seat.

Next time, in a few months, we will go at 10am and get in on the free 1 hour mill tour they offer: Monday through Friday only at 10am.

You will no doubt enjoy this story published by Oregon Live on February 16, announcing Bob Moore's generous gift to his employees on his 81st Birthday.

Okay, I just really wanted to share all of that with you. It feels great to do the right thing for your family's health, eh?

Have a great Sunday, Love & Sincerely, Katie

Honesty ~ today's 10x10 release

Good morning!

“Honesty” is today’s 10x10” painting release into ~ The Forty Minis Collection

“...I believe in honesty... besides holding back from my boys the scary and unnecessary things of our world (less compromise their sweet and valuable innocence) I tell them most everything.

They are my constant companions and they realize so much and offer their insightful ideas and questions frequently. They ache to understand how come, what if, why and really?!

I believe in being honest with my feelings and teaching them to do the same. Talking, discussing, repairing and offering gentle touches. They affect me and I, them ~ that is how life goes ~ the most important part is sorting it all out.

My boys were painting with me while I was finishing up this piece. My four year old mixed up the beautiful lavender so I asked for some to mingle into my own painting. He mixed me a new batch, and I was impressed. I ache with pride as they so carefully and thoughtfully create their own pieces.

The emotions I feel for them want to shred me at times… but that is how motherhood goes, right?"

See this new painting and the available 10x10s in The Online Etsy Shop.

SPECIAL NOTE: While I am away (Feb 23-March 5), I am going to remove the Original Paintings from the online shop - because these paintings will be featured in physical galleries. If you are interested in one of the Original Paintings, just shoot me an email at katie@kmberggren.com and I can make it available for you in the Etsy shop!

Have a great day! Thank you for your support and kindness.

Motherhood Prints by Katie m. Berggren now available at Bella and Boo

Bella & Boo was founded by Kate Agarwal, and here is Kate's story:

Kate and Ella of Bella & BooHello! My name is Kate Agarwal and I am the founder and owner of Bella & Boo. My family and I live in the lovely Village of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, just 10 miles north of Milwaukee.

My youngest daughter, Ella, was the inspiration behind Bella & Boo. I am happy to share with you my story and tell you how one inspired dream came to fruition.

Soon after Ella was born, I noticed that she would break out in rashes after wearing certain pieces of clothing.

We wondered if it might be a food allergy or some other type of allergy. As regular practice, our family took care to use eco-friendly & natural laundry detergents & soaps, so we knew that those products could not be to blame.

My husband and I were very concerned and began searching for the reason behind our daughter’s terrible skin reactions... enjoy the rest of Kate's story here

I am proud to be partnering with Kate and Bella & Boo ~ and I sincerely invite you to view Bella & Boo's mission and products here.

The Newest Commissioned Piece ~ Divine Intervention

...the first sketch is always loose and rough - I find the more I attempt to finesse the initial drawing, the more static and less free-flowing the sketch becames. I realize the trust I require from my client in this first sketch...

...raw umber and zinc white allow me to take the composition to canvas, finessing figure form and space.

This painting started out, then I hit a lull in inspiration for a few days (completely normal and natural, just resting the creative process) while I worked on other pieces.

...when inspiration popped back up, it came with a vengeance and I could hardly NOT work on this piece!

...additional forming and modeling, creating shadows and highlights.

...introducing color (and I realize I went a little further than usual here, before snapping a photo, I found this painting addictive)

...near completion - I had to work to stop myself one evening so that I could wait for morning's fresh light to photograph before going further - I wanted to show my client one more process photo before completion.

...completion

I have titled this painting Divine Intervention, based on the words of the mother I created it for.
Thank you, C.L, this painting was a joy to create, and you were a calming pleasure to work with.

Free Cards Friday, Harry Potter ~ shared things, Valentine's Day

Good Afternoon!

It's Free Cards Friday! Comment on this post (here at the blog or on my Facebook page) and be in the running to win some cards ~ I'll choose the winner on Monday.

We just got back from the Portland Children's Museum, then playing outside with kites and friends, it was very fun. It occurs to me that it is 2:30pm and the house is still clean from last night's after bedtime blast! Wow - it pays to get out and get active vs staying at home and tearing the place apart :)

We have been reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I'm reading it to my boys and we are all having so much fun. Spending hours at a time cuddled together on the bed, the beanbag or couch, reading and experiencing it together.

I find myself getting into the voices and characters, and have to slow down to make sure that they understand ~ which they seem to ~ and if I stop to say "how are you doing?" or "are you following me okay?" my 4 year old bangs on the book and raises his eyebrows saying "go on, go on!!"

Today, my 5 year old has been saying Leviosa! testing out his Wizard powers! He made the garage door raise, so I was impressed :)

Having something we can all three share has been very special (thank you to my friend for loaning us the book). And knowing there are many books and many pages ahead in the series makes me feel happy.

I recently read somewhere: If your child has a thing for video games (enter your child's interest here) and you do not have an interest in video games (same interest), you have just missed an opportunity to have a shared thing.

I like that.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, just hanging out and enjoying your moments. I am packing paintings in my studio, preparing for some shipments and in general getting things cleaned up.

This weekend brings Valentine's Day and despite the fact that I am a woman, (I'm talking to you: every jewelry, flower and candy store) not all of us want candy, roses or some bling ~ what I desire is comfortable times, a good meal together and time to relax :)

Happy Valentine's Day to you!

Love & Sincerely ~ Katie

Light Of Day ~ Today's 10x10 Release

Motherhood Painting: Light Of Day

Motherhood Painting: Light Of Day
Motherhood Painting: Light Of Day
The raw emotion that I most always feel while working on a painting is sometimes hidden, sometimes shielded from the viewer, in the finished piece. Because, as the creator, I am sometimes uneasy about its intensity.

A recent painting ignited a passion and that passion sprung forth into the paint - resulting in a piece that felt very satisfying, very organic.

This newest painting follows that course, encouraging me to bring the real, raw, true-to-life emotion that I feel while painting into the light of day.

Light Of Day is today's release into The Forty Minis Collection.

A Good Enough Parent

I've read a lot of parenting books over the years, and books on life in general. Several have wowed me and I've written about many of them here, shared their tidbits, and I plan to do more of the same.

The book I am reading right now, in all my spare time (which means while I brush my teeth ~ my dentist loves me) has put a concept in my mind that I have only considered, but have never had the brains to put into words.

Bruno Bettelheim's A Good Enough Parent http://www.amazon.com/Good-Enough-Parent-Child-Rearing/dp/0394757769

(copyright 1987, by the way, good ideas stick around)

Bettelheim's idea is basically (very basically, since I am typing this from memory) to put yourself in your child's shoes. To imagine what they must be feeling and to react to situations with this in mind.

motherhood painting: I Can See Clearly NowHe states that we should not choose and follow a parenting book's ideals as a straightforward way to do things, a set of rules, but to develop our own insights in order to help us understand our child's behavior, and our own, adjusting our own behavior to successfully cope with issues that arise.

Looking at life and problems from your child's point of view and understanding their motivation helps us to help them become the little people they truly want to be. Not the little people we think they should become.

I admit, when I first checked this book out I was enamored by the title. Then, after it sat for two weeks on my bookshelf while I tried to read a bit of the other books I had selected from the library that day, I finally picked it up.

My first feeling was "no way, I'm not reading this" as, aesthetically, it is not a pleasing book beyond the cover (at least my copy isn't). The text is very small, the leading is tight, the pages seem packed full of words. Not a lot of breathing room, quite intimidating!

Motherhood Painting: You and UsHowever, I was brushing my teeth, so I figured I'd open it up and take a gander.

Within the first paragraph this book began sharing with me that a child's level of anxiety is directly related to the anxiety of their parent(s). That even during natural disasters children can be relaxed and having the time of their lives if they see that their parents are not anxiety-ridden and stressed out.

This helped me to understand the value of "keeping things from my children" - things they don't need in their little hearts, souls and minds. Daily news events, work stresses and things that pertain to adults.

So, I'm slowing working through this book and getting a lot out of it (so sorry to the person who currently has it on hold after me) and will share more later, hopefully.

Free Cards Friday! After The Bath, literally :)

It is nearly Saturday (thank goodness) but it is still Free Cards Friday!

Motherhood Painting: After The BathI was just working on a commissioned painting and finishing my lovely cup of green tea with lemongrass (compliments of my sweet friend) when I decided that I would get 8 hours of sleep tonite. 8 hours of sleep for mama benefits every soul in the house :)

I turned everything off and headed out of the studio - then I remembered that I never created this post - it was a busy day!

Comment on this post (here at the blog or on my Facebook page) and be in the running to win some cards ~ I'll choose the winner on Monday.

I gave my boys a relaxing lavender bath tonite, and because I didn't allow anything work related to come between the three of us tonite, it was a joyful and happy experience.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mine ~ Thursday's New Painting

Wednesday night, I was working on a completely different painting, when all of the sudden I painted out the father and launched into something entirely different. The painting of the father was the warm-up, I guess, for what was really needing to come out: Mine.

Motherhood Painting: Mine

Motherhood Painting: Mine

Motherhood Painting: Mine

Motherhood Painting: Mine
There is an intensity that comes to a mother – a protective and selfish urge to pull her babies in while pushing away all things with a slight tendency to threaten the sacred innocence of those children. I felt this today in the Post Office – a loud cell-phone-talking man dripping with bravado and attitude arrived and stood too close. I felt myself reach for the shirt of my big boy and tighten the grip on the soft hand of my little one.

In this painting, the children’s open eyes are purposeful – as I not only urge mine to grab hold of each other first in an emergency, but to also keep their eyes open and listen to their instincts.
Note: in some sense I know that my children are not “mine” in actuality, but that we have been given the great blessing of raising and protecting them…

Mine is today's release into The Forty Minis Collection. See a print of it in the Online Etsy Shop.

Have a great day ~ Thank you for your communication, friendship, support and kindness.

My Upcoming Sabbatical

A sabbatical is defined as: (from the Latin sabbaticus, from the Greek sabbatikos, from Hebrew shabbat, i.e., Sabbath, literally a "ceasing") a rest from work, a hiatus, typically lasting two or more months.

Well, mine will be for 10 days, and I will not be taking a complete rest of work - I will be in Sweden, with my Brother and his Wife, their new baby and my Mom, and I will still be doing some painting. But I will be recharging my batteries, renewing my spirit, reconnecting with silence and hopefully filling my sketchbook.

2 1/2 years ago I made this same trip and the inspiration that met me on Swedish and Finnish soil was invigorating and led to several (now sold) paintings.

I will be out of the country and away from my studio and office from February 22 - March 5, and will be reconnecting with my family for the weekend following.

Back to business Monday March 8.
