Conscious Parenting, Free Cards Friday

Hello! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

From the time my first little boy was born, I have had ONE big burning parenting question. One question above all over questions. Throughout his young life I learned a bunch about parenting styles, health and such - but this ONE big burning question remained.

I asked other mothers, I asked my grandmother's sister (who was about 85 at the time) and her response still lingers in me.

I read books, I google searched, I asked the doctor.... but the question remained.

About a month ago, I was on Twitter , Tweeting like a good Twit should, and I saw a post about Conscious Parenting and a free teleclass.

Being an info buff and loving free teleclasses because they always send you the recording later (I never am able to have an hour of quiet time during the day, as you also have experienced!)

The woman who sent the Tweet was Jacqueline Green of Great Parenting Practices.

The teleclass speaker was Phil Johncock.

When signing up, I was allowed to put in one question for Phil. I quickly submitted my ONE big burning question:

"How much time each day should I spend one-on-one playing with my child?"

Jacqueline sent me the free recording and would you know that MY ONE big burning question was the first question (in the first five minutes of the show, no less) that Phil answered.

His response was (in my words):

If you are conscious and aware in each moment then the amount of time that you should spend with your children will be obvious.

At first I felt a bit jipped, but then over the course of the next couple days, I realized that he was right. When I am in each moment and paying attention to my boys, listening to their words, looking into their faces to find the story, then deep in my soul I already know the answer to my ONE big burning question.

If you pay attention to their behavior and how they are feeling, you will automatically know when to spend one-on-one time with them, and how much they need.

I was thinking, this week, about Conscious Parenting, and googled to find this Conscious Parenting 101 article by Lela Davidson. It's a good read, so I have pasted it below, it is COPYRIGHT LELA DAVIDSON, of course:

---------------------

Thanks to Oprah Winfrey, Eckhart Tolle's, A New Earth (note from Katie - this is a fantastic book), including it's message of the idea of conscious parenting is getting widespread media coverage. Whether or not you agree with all of Tolle's ideas, his advice on parenting is sound.

According to Tolle, conscious parenting consists largely of simply being with your child. This article explores that idea, as well as some other aspects of this new movement in parenting.

What is Conscious Parenting?

Before you dismiss these ideas as too new-agey and fluffy for you, consider the meaning of the word conscious according to Websters:

1. perceiving, apprehending, or noticing with a degree of controlled thought or observation
2. sharing another's knowledge or awareness of an inward state or outward fact
3. personally felt
4. capable of or marked by thought, will, design, or perception
5. self-conscious
6. having mental faculties undulled by sleep, faintness, or stupor : awake
7. done or acting with critical awareness
8. likely to notice, consider, or appraise
9. being concerned or interested
10. marked by strong feelings or notions

Synonyms: Aware, Awake

Doesn't seem so woo-woo now does it? Let's all be more conscious in our parenting, more aware of how we're perceiving and appraising our children, as well as noticing our behavior and what's behind it.

Shifting Paradigms

Proponents of conscious parenting believe we are at a crucial point in the history of our planet. Basically, the future of the human race depends on our children's ability to be peace-makers. Whether you believe this is nothing new, simply the human condition, or you believe major destruction is imminent if we don't take major action now - you'll have to agree that raising peaceful little people is not a bad thing. Maybe conscious parenting is the philosophy that speaks to you and helps you be the best parent you can be. In other words, can't hurt, might help.

Mama Comes First

Conscious parenting calls for parents to pay attention to their children and, more importantly to their own thoughts and behaviors. It's important to understand out own needs and personal hurts in order to avoid repeating painful patterns from our past. The idea is to limit the damage we pass on to our children so that they grow into healthy and balanced people.
Especially when frustration levels are high, we tend to fall into old, familiar patterns of behavior. Conscious parenting is all about being awake and aware to what's going on with your child now and deal with that situation or feeling.

Give Children What They Need

According to Michael Grayson Conner, child psychologist, parents need to pay particular attention to the words we use, as well as our expectations when dealing with our children. According to Conner, here is what children need:

•Children need examples and simple instructions. They need you to show them what you want and how to do it.

•Children need to practice. It is best to have simple goals with only a few steps. Tasks that are complex should be broken down into smaller takes. As a general rule, complex activities need to be practiced about 60 times before it becomes natural. •Children need supervision and guidance when they are learning new tasks. The idea is to keep students on task, correct mistakes, help when they are stuck, allow them to struggle, and to avoid discouraging failures.

•Children need lots of encouragement and praise for their initiative, creativity and effort. They need to learn that persistence in the face of failure and discouragement can lead to success.

•Children need opportunities to do things on their own while someone periodically monitors their behavior.

We practice conscious parenting when we are actively engaged in meeting these needs. When we are paying attention to what the child needs right now. Conner provides a great example of an . interaction between a child who's been asked to clean her room and a parent who just wants it done

I've been preparing for the da Vinci arts fair, and also working on Enchanted. Here are the newest images, she's gone through several transformations, and I am currently working on that eye that looks beat up!

Also, shown here are the Glass Art Charms (Tiny Moments to Take Along!) in their new packaging.

I started another gaggle of Glass Charms last night - and will post some more to the Online Etsy Shop in the next couple days.

I love their sweet, tiny smoothness.

Here is a reminder for the da Vinci arts fair:

Saturday Bliss - Enchanted Progress - 10x10 Sneak Peek

We did yard work this morning, then headed out into the woods to hike with some fresh peanut butter cookies packed... we came home with boys riding on our shoulders :)

Now, the boys are playing happily together and my hubby and I are each doing something for ourselves - I'm painting and he is watching football ~ and it is truly blissful.

I'm working on a new painting that I think I will call Enchanted, but I'm not 100% sure yet. I am feeling the influences of Cling in this one. (psst, Cling is the final Giclee release this month! Next Thursday morning ~ then starts The Forty Mini Collection.)

It was inspired by the first 10x10 I completed for the Forty Minis Collection beginning in December - I am getting a head start on the collection and currently have three paintings complete. This is the first one:

I am not sure of its title, just yet - I'd love your ideas! If I choose your title I'll send you a free print of this painting.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Love & Sincerely,
Katie

Free Cards Friday - Mentors & Fellow Artists

A few days ago, a local artist gave me a ring ~ with a question that I gladly answered. This got me thinking about the artists that I have called on in my days, and as I asked this artist to keep in touch, I started to think of those who have influenced, supported and inspired me over the years:

When I first entered Community College, I was taking every 2D art class I could find – I was new and young and that was where my friend Shirley, one of the first women I met in my first art classes there, inspired me with her warm friendship ~ we would get together and draw each other and I loved seeing her past work and hearing her stories.

Mary Engelbreit was the first professional/commercial artist that provided inspiration – knowing that as a child she used her parents closet as a studio simply because she needed a space to work helped me to keep my fire burning in the early years as my bedroom floor was my studio and later when my kitchen table served this purpose until an AHA! moment got me wondering why the laundry deserved its own room in the house and my art didn’t?

The laundry room became a darling little “studio” for me, complete with a sink.

I had needed a place to spread out – a place where I could leave wet (and bigger) paintings out – where little fingers could not play in paint. Where I could close the door and tool away with my music and my silence.

Mary Engelbreit inspired me in many ways – although my pieces never urged to be as sweet as hers ~ her book The Art and The Artist gave me several insights into her life.

Someday I will have a book with a similar title, that I can only hope will inspire other artists.

Funny, at an art fair several years ago, a buyer at my table out-of-the-blue blurted “M.E. has NOTHING on you!” (Mary Engelbreit signs her pieces as ME)

Patience Brewster offers information for artists on her sit and I have adored following her career since my friend introduced me to her work in Olympia, Washington many years ago. Patience and others, long ago, inspired the whimsy that I love so much to instill in selected paintings.

Susan Mrosek of Pondering Pool is an amazing artist and gracious woman with a depth of mind, humor, and writing worth pining for. Her pieces may draw you in, make you think, laugh, wonder, ponder, then let you out again – with a humorous, changed perspective on those tiny moments in life.

I’ve loved following Susan’s work and had a couple inspiring chats with her when I was just introducing my 8x10 prints – I like to think she held my hand verbally while I hatched the idea and let it out into the world. She was there to answer questions and offer advice.

Jody Bergsma has also mentored me, although she may not realize. Her giving, nurturing, loving nature shows in her work, her correspondence and connections with her followers, and her writing. She has a well-deserved clan of fans that have followed her for over 20 years. Jody gave me some advice over the phone years ago (I’ve never been afraid to pick up the phone and ask for advice!), and in the last month emailed me with a very sweet quote – about sharing my love with the world through my art and BLASTED! Would you know I misplaced that sweet quote and have yet to find it on my computer system. Too many conversations swirling around me, I guess.

A special recognition goes to Julia Marrocco, who planted the seeds of business in me over 10 years ago as I worked along side her as her assistant in Real Estate – I could not have asked for a better education. Not a day goes by when I don’t think of the tidbits she taught me – just through the way she interacted with her clients, her files and with me. When I analyze my business today, I find that over 50% of what I do is somehow connected (although altered over the years and shaped for the art world) to Julia. She is one of the most dear and knowledgeable humans I’ve met.

Over the last several years, I have received countless emails asking for advice, and I’ve answered them all (except that one from Alex that disappeared from my email box and I couldn’t find it to save my life – sorry, Alex!). And I usually send a long a bit of kudos, too, to the student ~ just for asking.

Marie Wise is my friend and was my partner in the Kalama Artist Association a couple years ago – the association dwindled, and when all others went away, Marie and I chose to stay – having tiny meetings to discuss marketing, materials and art.

Then of course, my down-to-earth, zen-inspiring brother, Kevin Conrad, who I have the luck of sharing the passion of art and art business with. He is a painter in Swedenand we communicate and share long distance. I am looking forward to visiting him in February – Sweden always inspires me in a deep unimaginable way.

With these giving and purposeful people deep in my roots, I feel steadier than I have felt in my entire career. Not to mention the inspiration and support garnered from an ever-growing list of collectors, fans and friends and fellow artists. It is they (you) that keep me pushing, night after night as the moon is high and the tea drains low – as the babies sleep and the night closes in around me.

Thank you ALL.

Artists: to find information & inspiration in ways you didn’t know existed, I highly recommend Alan Bamberger with ArtBusiness.com. Alan continues to delight and educate with his writing style that dissolves whining and excuses – an hour consultation with him helped to set me straight and square away fine details of my business. I forever appreciate his sarcastic wit and sharp skills.

Also, Ariane Goodwin is incredibly inspiring and intuitive; Alyson Stanfield with Art Biz Coach demolishes artists’ excuses; and Marty Rudolph is very much worth studying.

Some folks I also like are: Stuart at Creativity Pro and Empty Easel

Don’t forget, today is Free Cards Friday – comment on this post anytime between now and Monday and be in the running to win!

Merchild ~ Today's Giclee Release ~ New Glass Charms

Merchild is today's Giclee Release!

Thiese pieces are signed & numbered 12x15 (Limited Edition of 30) archival, high quality Giclees of an original acrylic painting, printed on heavy weight Enhanced Matte smooth stock - with a white margin for framing.Prints are carefully packaged with an acid-free board and sleeve and shipped within two business days.

About Merchild:

I had been working on this composition and I adored the way the figures came together, but there was something missing... while working on a commissioned piece, I had a big blob of green paint left over and decided to introduce these figures to the green. Suddenly, my previous love of creating mermaids came back and I found myself very much enjoying the process of adding detail and sparkle. My previous mermaids were very detailed and whimsical.

Along with birds and Chinese painting techniques - whimsical details are characteristics that I want to re-introduce into my current style.

WHAT IS A GICLEE ANYWAY?
Giclees are Museum quality Fine-Art reproductions, also called Archival Prints. These are the result of highly advanced digital printing technology using fade-resistant archival (acid free) inks inks known to last at least 70 years.A Giclee is the closest to an original painting as you can get.These prints are made using an ultra-high-resolution printer, using enhanced smooth matte acid free paper.The color, quality of materials, and overall look makes a Giclee much more valuable than any other type of reproduction. Notably more valuable if the edition is limited to 100 prints or less, and if the Giclee has been pencil signed and numbered by the Artist.

New Glass Charms in the Studio

I have a new batch of glass to work with ~ and it turns out it's a bit bigger than I expected, but I am loving it.
These new charms are 7/8 of an inch, square (where the previous ones are 5/8 x 6/8 of an inch)

Tonite, I've been working on creating glass charms from the 85 8x8s Collection - I'll have 15 new charms within the next couple days, and I am very excited about them. It is exhilarating to see these new little paintings again - and in such a quaint new size! (any recommendations?)

Here is a comparison of the previous charms (left) and the new size.

I hope you have a great week!

Free Cards Friday! My Newest Epiphany - so glad I took the time to write it down.

Hi! I'm feeling very domestic today - and so I thought I'd take a quick break for a Friday post.

I had an epiphany last night:

•When I think about what needs to be cleaned, folded, sorted, vacuumed, organized and put away around the house (Home) - I feel fine and get ready to dig in.

•When I think about what needs to be packaged, listed, uploaded, designed, painted, photographed or created in the studio (Studio) - I smile and start making a list.

HOWEVER! When I think about all that needs to be done around the house, then I think about all that needs to be done in the studio/business - my body instantly floods with overwhelm... and I begin bouncing from one area of my life to the other, creating a not-so-good day.

My thought was this - if I channel my thoughts and energy to ONE area of my life at a time, for a period of time ~ Studio or Home (I know it sounds so easy) ~ then I feel far more peaceful and get a whole lot more accomplished.

For instance, I am writing this blog post right now, then going BACK to cleaning, without even checking my email box - because I know that box will grab me by the neck and pull me into a whole new area that I am not ready for just yet this morning :)

Those who know me know that I have a disenchantment with multi-tasking, so this is just another part of it - on a larger scale.

What do you think?

Comment on this post throughout the weekend (on the Painting Motherhood Blog or on Facebook) and be in the running to WIN Free Cards! I will choose the winner on Monday.

P.S. I just discovered a long smear of muddy footprints stretching from the backyard to the garage - directly diagonal across the lovely floor my 5-year old and I had JUST cleaned, aargh, I guess that's the way it goes. Thank goodness for a good vacuum cleaner (and plenty of patience).

Have a purposeful and mentally-organized day!

Love & Sincerely,

Katie

Charms in Progress - 1st Giclee Tomorrow Morning - December Plans

Good evening!

Stand-by, the first Giclee release is TOMORROW MORNING!! Stay tuned to the Giclee page in the Online Esy Shop if you'd like to grab one!

(PSSSTTTT.... it's Linger)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today, my boys and I were playing at the park ~ goofing off and channelling Superman from the swings... a Daddy and his (cutest I've ever seen) little girls came to play. He had just gotten off work, I could tell, as he watched them play - his face serious and furrowed - giving them just as much attention as they needed to not fall from the climbing bars...
It was time for us to go so I enticed my boys into a 3 minute game of tag before we had to walk home. Our tag game sent us flying through the grass, arms out, wild-eyed and crazy ~ fun.
...the little girls watched us with shy smiles...
Our three minutes turned into five and I raced my boys to the wagon and the entrance to the park. We trudged home, hand in hand and as we came around the corner, I turned back to see the two little girls enticing their Daddy into a game of tag - in the same area of grass where we had been playing near the park toys. I stared and observed, as I usually do whenever another human is close by (especially a parent), and felt so happy as I watched the Daddy go from hands-in-his-pockets watching the girls chase each other to jogging around with them ~ having a bit of a good time.
I felt warm with pride for my little boys and our little family. It may have been the nicest thing we 've done for someone else all week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On another note, I'm working on a few more (6) Glass Art Charms in the studio tonite, as well as thinking about December, let me tell you what I have in mind :)
